Posted by: Ann
on: 08/07/10 04:00 PM

Ellen and John are right. They are fine in your wheelbarrow. I just found one I threw away several months ago putting out new growth under my potting bench so don't hurry. Give us pictures. If they are naturalized on branches which you now have sitting in a wheelbarrow, all they probably need is a screw eye in the top of the branch so they can be hung somewhere. But we need to know what you have so we can tell you where to hang them. Good for you for not wanting them to die!!!

Oh, and just for the fun of it. Where are you in south Florida?

Posted by: Rich
on: 07/21/10 11:45 AM

eu, a 10 gallon aquarium is very small for most commercially available orchids. Two fully leafed Phals will fill it easily, (we won't mention the inflorescences) . The Rodriguezia venusta are smaller and will fit while young.
You'll have to think of a larger enclosure such as an orchidarium
or smaller truly miniature orchids, { Capanemia uliginosa and Sedirea japonica are fragrant mini's which come to mind}.

re. Wood choice: avoid soft woods. One reason Virgin Cork is so widely used in orchids is its near inability to rot. Weathered cedar or freshwater driftwood are also good choices.

Keep in mind Air Movement will also keep mold down.
Have some Physan on hand as general 'disinfectant' .

Two cents so added
Courage to you

Posted by: Virgin Grower
on: Yesterday at 11:53 AM

Thanks to ya all! I examined the roots of my keiki growing on a Phal plant and decided it had been under stress for sure. There are about 6 roots in the pot in which I had planted earlier (in spagnum moss, sponge rock and cocoa chips). I will feed it and let it go.

Posted by: Irma
on: 05/20/10 06:34 PM

The twine around the moss and roots is only for mounted orchids ( orchids that are mounted on cork bark or tree fern plaques ), to keep them from falling off the mount.
Orchids in pots have only to have the sphagnum moss stuffed around the roots. Don't press them too tight, and, please, try to leave them alone for a while without re-potting after you buy them to give them time to get used to your conditions. Unless, of course, the media they are in is soggy, rotted or too old.
