Hello everyone,

I'm sharing some pictures that I took during my visit to the Kinabalu National Park last Christmas. The diversity of orchids there is amazing. Orchids were growing on the trees and on the ground and I was delighted to find so many in bloom. There were some that I reconised, but most were new to me. Do let me know if you can identify any of them.

The last one looks like Calanthe triplicata.

HM (Henry) and Rainforest (Peter) are from Borneo, and they might be able to identify many of these speices for you. You might want to send a PM to them.

I was there last March/April, but didn't see too many in bloom on Mt. Kinabalu even though I spotted many on trees. The most notable ones in bloom I saw were Bulbophyllum catenarium and Bulbophyllum anguliferum

Did you climb to the summit of Mt. Kinabalu? I did! Dancin

lovely! Sounds like a trip I would adore..

#2 appears to be an Eria species and #5 may be a Chelonistele species

Yoshi and Ron, thanks for your input.

Those bulbos are cute! I'll have to go back to see them.

I didn't climb to the summit cos I didn't want to wake up at an unearthly hour grin

rocktop, you live on Borneo?

I'd like to go back to Mt. Kinabalu just to spend more time looking at orchids and other plants.

Hi Esther, I am just back from a trip to Sabah as well. enjoyed it very much. when are you going again? we should all try and organize a group trip there, would be fun to go with those of the same interests. The orchids in Kinabalu park are really amazing! Unfortunately, I also saw some destruction along certain trails and orchids that used to be there all gone.

How about late August/early September? I'm currently trying to
plan a trip to see Peter in Kuching and plunder the countryside
when weather begins to cool down a bit.

Note to Henry: you better be there to visit, my friend!

Esther, did you go to Poring as well? The species collection there is amazing. Mesilau nature reserve was very beautiful as well. I took a lot of pictures but haven't posted them.

Angela, that would be fun! How about October? Am not sure what orchids would be in bloom in August as that is the peak of the hot and dry period.

The Laksa Sarawak looks as good as the orchids (after a full day of hiking). Thanks for the great set of pictures.

Hi Esther, hi everybody, I'm new to the forum, thanks Henry smile My favourite genus is Coelogyne. I would suggest C. cuprea for unidentified 1 and C. exaltata for unidentified 6, unidentifed 9 could be Pholidota carnea, that one has just flowered at home.
Elisabeth

Henry, yes I went to Poring to see the orchid collection and encountered my one and only leech there eek

It was well worth the trip and I also went on the canopy walk and managed to spot some orchids and ant plants.

October sounds good to me for a visit. Are you talking about Kinabalu or just around Kuching?

Mike, I did not get to taste any laksa on my last trip. Kolo mee is also great after a long hike. Actually, I like it even if I've not been hiking grin

Hi Elisabeth,

Thanks for your help with the identification. Unidentified #1 does look more like C. cuprea than C. speciosa.

I can't figure out how to edit my first post, but I've updated my labels on photobucket.

Esther, I didn't see any leeches while in Poring. I did the canopy walk and found it too short, I wished it was at least 1km long. It would be fun to have one at Kinabalu Park because of the mossy forest there, so many orchids and other interesting epiphytes on the trees!

October for both Sarawak and Sabah!

Peter, yes I've been to Bario - I think I posted some pictures from that trip. I didn't get to Mulu though.

Henry, I wished that the canopy walk was longer too. I took as much time as I could on it and probably irritated all those people who had to pass by me. The leech found me at the orchid conservation centre. Fortunately, I brushed it off before it could bite grin
