Greetings, orchid experts! I lovingly place my babies (mostly phals, but also brassia, and a cymbidium or two) underneath a Serviceberry tree every June-Sept. or so here in Wisconsin, as it is the only place that receives perfect dappled sunlight, and is protected, etc. The birds love the berries, which they consume in quantity, leaving their gizzards and little birdie intestines full! Sooooo, is the poop a problem? It does land with frequency on the leaves, roots, etc. and is washed by the rain. Just wondering; doesn't seem to be a problem, just messy! I do give them a batch once in awhile to help clean them.

Of course the analysis will vary with type of bird and their diet, but a NC State study of poultry manure came back with analyses showing very little nutritional value. One - "undercage scrapings" - had an equivalent N-P-K analysis of 0.014-0.016-0.001

I have heard of coffee grounds used to keep slugs and snails away, but have no idea of its use as a fertilizer.

found this info

Coffee grounds have an N-P-K composition of roughly 2.0-0.2-0.3. They increase the availability of P and K, plus they release N as they decompose

OK, go ahead and dump them into your potting medium. Then tell me how long until they clog up the air flow and suffocate the roots.

Coffee grounds are at best only a mild slug deterrent.
While ok as a soil amendment, Ray is correct they are too fine for most orchid mediums.
Better to just toss them in your compost bin. wink

For something that is supposed to be a slug deterrant, the coffee grounds in my compost always seem to be covered with slug slime trails.

Read the above link more carefully Eric wink ,
" A 1% solution can be expected to kill 60% of slugs while a 2% caffeine solution will knock out 95% of all slugs.
.....Fresh coffee contains approximately .05% caffeine. This means that coffee grounds, (which contain even less), and fresh coffee will not kill slugs but may act as a mild deterrent."

Is that staight poop, or is there bedding materiel mixed in? Growing up my grandparents always said that chicken manure was too "hot" to use with out composting. Another old wives tale down the tubes??
