Quito, the capital of Ecuador, has a beautiful botanical garden, including a large orchid house, which I enjoyed on my first day in Ecuador.

Here are some of the orchids in bloom that I saw:

Caucaea cucullata

Cyrtochilum monachicum

Dracula simia

Masd. veitchiana

Masd. coccinea

Maxllaria striata

Here is slide show of more orchids from Quito Botanic Garden (It also shows non-orchid plants from the garden.)

It was disappointing to find that many of the plants were not tagged and that the writings on some of the tags had faded. Still, I enjoyed a long visit.

It is too bad that they don't label the plants clearly but I am glad you still had a wonderful time. Thank you for all those wonderful photos, Yoshi.

FYI, the first Masd. is not coccinea. It is Masd. veitchiana. The last Max. photo is of Max. striata.

Thanks, Tom, for the correction and identifying the maxillaria. Mislabeling the masdevallia was entirely due to my carelessness! frown

Hmmm, the slide show won't open for me. I tried Safari, Firefox and SeaMonkey on my Macbook Pro.

Ursula, the slide show is a Java applet that I wrote, meaning it ought to be perfect! smile Do you have Java enabled on your Macbook Pro? What happens when you click on the link?

Yoshi, I just looked at it again. Yes, Java is turned on.
I get the following messages:
On Firefox/SeaMonkey:
Applet Slide show notloaded
Safari:
Applet Slide Show notinited.
( exactly copied)
It is no biggy, next week I can look at it on my daughter's PC.

Hmmmm, that's no good! I thought Java applets were device independent! mad 'Sorry for the inconvenience, Ursula.

Also that one labeled "I know this one but...."

is Comparettia speciosa.

I would also guess that the one labeled "Another NoID" is Ada aurantiaca, but the leaves don't look quite right - could just be the photo though.

Thanks again, Aceetobe! I think you're right about Ada aurantiaca, also.

Thanks, Posey. It only took 2 months to get one response!

It was indeed a large garden - but not nearly as huge as the Kew, of course. It was worth visiting.
