Orchids are Crack!

Hello everyone,
Recently received this cattleya warm grower from Orquievalle at the Redlands show, I had a good friend pick it up for me and ship it. When it arrived, it was looking great had a few like purpley spots on one of the leaves but figured it was nothing serious. I potted it up on saturday- everything was sterilized with bleach and soap, clean medium, sterilized blade. Anyhow last night I noticed this weird blackening on the edges of the leaves- my immediate assumption was virus high heat and stress got it. Some other friends are telling me its fungal/bacterial. All the other plants I potted up in put in a shaded west window with it are doing fine, none are showing any odd signs.
I've already isolated it -
If you have any idea what it might be, please let me know, and suggestions on what to do.
Thanks
Suz

Thats definitely not virus. Looks fungal to me. Baceterial infections can often have a watery sort of appearance at the edges.

Use Cleary's for systemic action or Phyton-27.

Don't use Physan. I'm not familiar with the other chemical you mentioned, but for this kind of problem I always use Cleary's 3336
which is a systemic. You can find a source using Google.

Looks like thiomyl is the same as Cleary's, only it's a wettable powder. I don't use physan, either, except to wash down benches and humidity trays - so I would think the thiomyl would be preferrable.

Ah good, I learned something today. However, the Cleary's I order
is a wettable powder...not real easy wettable, but I usually mix it
in my Spot Shot with fertilizer and it dissolves...eventually. rolleyes

Hi JoJo....thiomyl is the same as Cleery's 33336. The difference is that thiomyl only comes in 4 oz. size. When packaged in a larger amount, for instance, the 2lb. size, ((4 )8oz. packets) it is known as Cleery's.

cookiemonster: Physan 20 is good for maintenance. For fungal infection, the *best* control, mix 1tbs of Thiomyl(Cleery's) with 1 Tbs. Diathane 45. per gal. water.Using a gilmour sprayer, add 1 Tbs. of Coco-Wet, a wetting agent(spreader sticker) spray all your orchids.
Wait 7-10 days, spray again. Then spray every 5-6 weeks. You'll be very happy with the results. I live in wet, fungal infested florida. It's the best control. Please let me know if it helps!

Thank you for the updates-

I ended up pitching this one, because it started spreading to other parts of the plant even though I treated it with the thiomyl....

Then I found another fungus attacking some of my new Redlands Purpuratas- ended up pitching like 4 of them frown which was sad

I found the rhizome going brown and basically mumifying before spreading up to other pseudobulbs and up the bulb itself.... since these plants were in 3-4 inch pots, not much to cut off and save...

Im treating now everyone to a dose of thiomyl ....just to be safe-

The Cleary's I have is already in liquid form - big white bottle with green letters. For the life of me, I can't find it in those links. Maybe if you could find it, Angela, the WP wouldn't give you such fits.

It's on the first page, jojo. It's described as flowable and it comes in a qt size.
