This image actually came about when I was selecting a color range in this image:

http://www.flnativeorchids.com/images/orchids/pteroglossaspis_pottsii/pteroglossaspis_pottsii10.htm

for processing in photoshop. When I switched to quick mask mode to check on the mask, I thought it looked interesting...kinda contrasty like an old daguerotype. So, I copy & pasted and turned the mask into a new image.

This is a newly described species of orchid, endemic to one small area in Florida. Pteroglossaspis pottsii was first described just two years ago, having been determined to be a different plant than the related Pteroglossaspis ecristata.

Interesting.
Why not just opt for converting to B&W ?

What would it look like with a dark gray background, and a lighter gray subject?

The original background (in color) might have produced a more dramatic effect?
