Description
Phalaenopsis Tabasco Tex is a hybrid of Princess Kaiulani x George Vasquez registered in 1978. I have two clones, but this is my favorite. It is mounted on cork. It's a small plant. I did have a much larger one several years ago, but it was another plant that didn't survive the move and the cold winter temps in the garage before the greenhouse was complete. I was delighted to be able to get another one! The fragrance is delightful.

Sarcochilus Velvet is a cross of Nicky x Riverdene, registered in 1998. This is a remake of the cross and a first bloom seedling. I was hoping for a more solid red, but I still have a few more seedlings to bloom out. I hadn't realized that this was in bloom and was lucky to catch the last couple flowers before they dropped. I purchased these from DUNO the other year.

WOW, that's a collector's item. A real oldie! I love this kind of Phals, they seem to bloom for ever.
Some of that cross came out really Tabasco colored, Rich, it depends on the dominant color in the parents used.

You must have just the best selection of violacea hybrids around. Why not write an article for the AOS? I could subscribe for that.

I guess that's my roundabout way of saying... cool flower!

Beautiful flower. I love the color. Is this plant available anywhere
for purchase now or has it gone by the wayside of lost orchids?
I should also specify that I'm referring to the Phal., although the
Sarc. is beautiful as well.

This clone isn't commonly available. I was really upset when the stem prop that I had purchased died during the move (it was one of my first 'nice' plants and had grown into a big plant) and had asked for more. Sadly, there were no more stem props available, but a couple years later, I was able to get a keiki. I got lucky--really lucky.

For a while, Peter Lin carried a different clone of Tabasco Tex (I don't recall the clonal name, I would have to go to the GH to check) and I picked one up thinking that I'd never be able to get the 'Harford' clone again. The clone from Peter is a solid dark magenta, with a touch more red in it and fuller shape.

I have picked up quite a few violacea/bellina hybrids over the years, but there are people that know much more than I do about the "novelty" type hybrids and old and new breeding lines.
