Just love sea lions. They are really cute critters. Looks like you got close? Or was it a telephoto lens?

Although I did use a telephoto lens on many occasions, sea lions and iguanas were everywhere and so tame that one could easily step on them if not careful.

We were advised not to touch the animals and to keep at least 6 feet away. Since we were supposed to stay on a narrow path (to protect the vegetation and nesting sites) in many places, keeping at least 6 feet away was impossible. The animals and birds didn't get the memo to stay away from us.

Ellen:

You make me laugh.

Although I'm retired, I'm always learning.

Yesterday it made me blush to learn (on the Internet) what it meant to "hike the Appalachian Trail."

Today, you've given me yet another new term..."going Palin."

Sorry, Ann.

I was making a joke.

I can't imagine that my post offended you.

what's politiical about hunting wolves from a helicopter? sarah palin just happens to be the one high profile person in america who advocates it . . . and, sadly, that particular practice of wildlife husbandry is spilling into the lower 48.

I don't think it was directed at you, Hapshepsut (rats, I hope I spelled that right). I agree with you, ellen. I didn't know they were doing that in Oregon. What a shame! Why?

I know they "thin" the deer herds here from time to time and it has always made me a wee bit crazy. But - they do do damage in some of the outlying areas (to tree farms and the like) and a lot of them starve in the winter if there are a lot of them. I've never hit a deer, but that happens a lot here. The aftermath is not pretty.

And then a few years ago they wanted to go Palin on the Canada geese here. And offer them to the food shelves. Cry I went nuts. We get TONS of them here. They actually stop traffic on the highways from time to time. It didn't fly, though, no pun intended. They are just wonderful to have around, IMHO. Sure is a nice break from seeing only asphalt and cement that is "life in the city" when driving around. AND - people do brake for them, thank God.

unfortunately, nyc is not going to be so kind to their canadian geese. they are slated for a kill too. i don't like sport killing or killing animals whose habitat we have invaded. these animals are behaving as they have for centuries. i understand killing to eat but we humans too often kill mammals/fish/birds because they are inconvenient. what happened to loving god's creatures?

I'm sure that's because of the bird strikes, Ellen. I can certainly understand trying to keep them away from airports after that Hudson River nightmare, but then the officials start to go nuts and try to wipe out all of them everywhere JUST IN CASE they should set their sights on the airport. rolleyes Bummer for the birds, though. But then, as far as the Canada geese go, I always think of that movie with the little girl that "flew" her geese to a new location. Great movie and very touching. Of course, I can't remember the name of it.
