Description
After reading about the way some grow their leafless plants inside a gallon jug with a hole on the side I thought that the plastic thingie my new shower head came in was a perfect protective growing space for my Chiloschista and a recently bought ( at Redland ) Lepanthes. My Chilo has retained those two leaves since a year ago. No spikes yet.

Now see what you've done? I want to try that. Cool, Irma, and good luck.

An intriguing insight into the culture of humidity loving plants in relatively dry environment. I shall try it too with some plants. Love the calodyction, keep us posted about its progress, it may be that someday I will try L. teligoponiflora using this technique.

I was going to throw that funny container in the recycling bin but the ghost orchid inside the gallon jug came into my mind and I saved it. The nice thing is that this container is transparent and very thick and tough.

That's totally inventive. Love it!

But, say, Irma, how's the new shower head working?

Yes - the transparency of your container certainly is a step up from an opaque milk container. It is quite nice. How do you know what size you should make the hole?

The shower head is awesome! The old one had most of the holes clogged from the Calcium in the water ( had it for 10 years ). And the new one is prettier.

JoJo, the hole was already there. poke As I opened the container I thought that it was quite cool! A ready made little greenhouse! grin
A round, cup-like bubble was covering the hole. That's where the ball of the shower head was.
I got it from Sears, in case you want one. smile
I will post a photo of the whole thingie tomorrow.

That'd be great, Irma, but just remember every dollar spent on a new shower head is a dollar less spent on your friends at some seaside bodega!

I know, Irma, lol. I was just wondering if one found a transparent container WITHOUT a hole in it - how big would you make the hole. Obviously big enough to get the plant in there, but how big would the hole have to be to be effective as a "mini-greenhouse".

The shower head package opened like a box and I was able to hang the plants from one of the halves, then close it back. The hole was a plus.
Today I made two more with similar containers from Sun Bulb Cattleya seedlings I bought at the Supermarket. This time I had to cut out the holes. The containers are small and I used them for two small plants; a Pleuro and a Sophronitella. Just experimenting.
I guess that the smaller the hole the better, just to let excess humidity out.

Thanks. Be sure to let the group know how this works. I know you have a greenhouse with perfect conditions. I grow in the basement in winter. Will you keep them in the greenhouse - or in the house? 'Cause I'm thinking this might make it easier to watch those smaller orchids in my collection by having them upstairs in my house. Sometimes, my smaller ones just get overlooked if I get busy and don't get downstairs every other day. If I had them in the kitchen with proper lighting conditions, this may be a great solution for me.

Jo, the only plants I have inside the greenhouse are the Phals and any Cattleyas or Dendrobiums that may be in bloom ( to protect them from birds and bugs ). The rest, including the Pleuros, Masdies, etc are outside under shadehouses, open on the sides.

If you look in my other post, you can see the cyclone fence separating my backyard from my neighbor's backyard just behind the plastic container. It has only 33% shadecloth covering the area but, as it is between the two houses, and hanging from other plants' baskets, it receives bright shaded light from 11AM to 2PM. The area also has a very strong breeze mostly all day.

There is no way a person that grows inside the house can duplicate my setup. Only try to give the plants the best chance to maintain humidity and good light. But that is the fun of this, watching how people all around the world cultivate the same things under different conditions.

Thanks, Irma. Looks like I'd be better off sticking with my orchidarium, rather than try this.
