Description
This plant has escaped from it's pot into the ground in my greenhouse It now "pops up" randomly from the roots. I let it grow in one corner of the greenhouse and it blooms on and off all year long....especially in Spring through fall. The flowers are produced in abundance, in waves on new growth. One time it produced fruit, which ripen yellow and grow up to 3" long with little pulp...and they are edible; but, I happened to need to cut back the plant before they got up to edible size. I figured I'd try the fruit next time. It has never set fruit again; but, I've not tried to pollinate the flowers. Apparently, it does not self pollinate. It needs someone or something to do the deed. I must've had a bug or butterfly in my greenhouse when it set fruit last time. This hybrid is a cross of two hardy species (incarnata x cinnicata) and is reported to be root hardy down to 0*F, coming back vigorously in the spring. I've not tried it outside yet. Now that I've got extra shoots coming up, I should try one outside and see if it makes through next winter. Butterfly's love these flowers!

beautiful flower. smile
it sounds very much like what we call a 'banana passionfruit', it grows wild (given half a chance) in frost free areas of the country. the fruit is very edible.

Thats it, Ellen. Passionfruit is the fruit from Passionflower/Passiflora species.

LOVE it John. You know, its funny how unlike orchids, in passiflora nomenclature, a reciprocal cross is given a different name! So (cinnicata x incarnata) would be something completely different! It makes it so confusing!

John, P. Incense (incarnata x cincinnata) is a beauty! It must look very pretty in your greenhouse.

About the hardiness - it is supposedly not as hardy as incarnata ( May Pops). Incarnata is reportedly coming back from the roots after 0 degr F exposure.
Incense will need a little more protection/a really good mulch/planted closely to the house. If you have plenty material to try, it sounds like a good idea to test it outside.
I picked up this Spring a very pretty bright blue Passiflora and planted it against the house wall. According to the label it can also take 0 degr F. I suspect it is P. x colvillii (incarnata x caerulea)
I always have some Passifloras around which I take inside in Fall. My favorite is P. edulis, the blooms are gorgeous too and very fragrant and it is self pollinating!

Passionfruit makes a very delicious juice, very acid and high in Vit C. And it is a very potent diuretic. People here like it mixed with Rum or Vodka!
And off to pee they go!!!!!

Thanks for all your comments, everybody. I'd love to have another greenhouse with just Passifloras planted. There are so many beautiful kinds!

Gorgeous!! I love passionflowers, I just wish some of the spectacular reddish ones were hardy here, but they aren't. Incense is one of the prettiest of the purples.

Right now, I'm trying to figure out which one of my passionflowers survived the winter.... out of three different varieties, one survived, but I'm darned if I remember which one was which. I didn't think that they had made it, so I plucked out the tags and threw them out when nothing had appeared by mid-June. ugh.

I know for sure that P. caerulea did not make it, I'm just not sure whether the survivor is P. Incense or P. incarnata.... (probably incarnata...., as I remember that one being the most vigorous) Whatever it was, it didn't start coming back up until late June, and not in exactly the same place.

Whatever it was, it didn't start coming back up until late June, and not in exactly the same place. This plant of mine "appears" in random places around the general area where it is growing....sometimes it comes up right in the middle of the aisle!

I know... I should have left the tags, but generally, if it hasn't even started to sprout by mid-June, it is looong dead. Most of the "late" things to sprout and begin spring growth do so by mid-may.
