z5-6, I think you can do a number of cattleyas and their hybrids, various hardcane dendrobiums, brassavola nodosa, and hardy orchids like Bletilla striata. You could try Oncidiums (nothing with miltonia or odontoglossum, though).

Direct southern sun is a bit much for almost everything. You'd need a pergola/slat structure of some sort - something to make dappled shade. Its not enough to have them protected for 3 hours, then direct sun for 3 hours. Unless its evening sun.
